Creating A Home Full Of Personality

Live edge coffee table

We've all got different tastes and styles, but I think one of the most important things when it comes to interiors is making sure your home reflects you. Whether that's your love of pink, or a relaxed, bohemian fashion style, there's a few easy ways to make sure your home has lots of personality too.

BUY VINTAGE AND HANDMADE

Whilst I don't own a lot of 'trinkets', I'd say about half of my furniture is vintage, if not more. If you're lucky you might find some gems in a charity shop or car boots, otherwise you can invest a little more buying from vintage fairs or on ebay. But it's one of the best ways to guarantee you're buying something that is usually going to be one of a kind, and add some nice age to the room. A lot of modern pieces these days are based on retro designs, so it's great to go back to the originals. Mid-Century furniture is my favourite, you can read a post I wrote about the easiest pieces to add to your home here

I buy a lot of little handmade pieces too, things like plant pots. Usually they're something a little different to what you'll find on the high street, and create a bit of a conversation with house visitors. My spikey planter off Etsy is still one of my favourites.

CONSIDER THE WALLS

It's not just family photos and a mirror above the fireplace that belong on walls. Art is one of the best ways to add personality to your home, and I like to do this with a gallery wall. It looks effective to keep the frames all the same and have similar prints inside, but I prefer to mix and match. In my gallery wall I've got a mix of vintage prints, handmade slogans, movie posters and a mirror. Around my home I've also got plants on quite a few of my walls.

BRING THE OUTSIDE IN

I'm not much of a colour on the walls person, so a way I add a lot of colour and green to my home is having plants and flowers everywhere. I have mostly real but do have some fake options too so there's always something there. Read my post of the 10 easiest house plants to care for to get you started!

ADD LIGHTING

I think how a room is lighted is so important to the ambience and feel of a room. It's not enough for me to just have the main light, I love having table lamps, floor lamps and candles everywhere too.

DISPLAY YOUR COLLECTIONS

Don't keep all your collections away in drawers and cupboards, get them out and put them on display. Plants are really the only thing to collect, other than a few crystals; my brother has shelves and shelves of vintage cameras. Whatever is it you love, get it on display.

DON'T FORGET THE LITTLE THINGS

Sometimes it's easy to think all about the trends and what sort of look you want your home to have, it ends up becoming impersonal and like a show home. Buy the tacky fridge magnet from a wonderful holiday and put it on the fridge with pride. Make a wall full of your childs drawings, or their work that you're proud of. It's fine to put it all in a nice gold frame so it displays better (like I do!), just don't leave it in the drawer.

How do you like to add personality to your home?
