'Room for Improvement' challenge with Money Supermarket

Recently I was invited to take part in a challenge with Money Supermarket; they very kindly provided selected bloggers with £50 to improve a room, area or certain space in your home. There is A LOT that needs improving in the house that I'm in at the moment, but as it's rented and I'm planning on moving very soon, I decided I would improve the one area of my bedroom I really dislike, and search for the perfect dressing table I've longed for.

As you can see, before was not a pretty sight! This space was definitely about utilizing as much space as possible, on a hideous old £5 wooden trolley I had all the intentions of doing up when I first bought it. It took up a small space in my bedroom and obviously had everything on display, which meant it could end up pretty messy sometimes! It was functional, but just not at all what I wanted.

After spending almost four hours walking around all the second hand furniture shops I knew existed in Bolton and finding nothing, I'd almost given up hope! That is, until I went to Preston on Wednesday with my Mum and saw this in the window of a second hand store. My perfect, dream dressing table! I knew I had wanted an old, 1940s era art deco looking dressing table, but most of those are a dark coloured, heavy wood which wouldn't go with anything in my room, so I was incredibly lucky to find this one already upcycled into something more suitable. And even better, it had been newly reduced so was within my budget! It still cost me £45 which was a hefty lot of the money available, so I scoured around my usual charity shops and car boots looking for bits to add on it. Here's where I spent my money:

1940s dressing table: £45.
Silk flowers in a jar: £2 (TK Maxx).
1950s Blue Hyacinth talc: £1.50 (car boot).
1950s Bourjois powder pot: £1 (car boot).

Luckily I already had quite a few things I know would look lovely on the new dressing table, so I didn't have to spend too much on decorations. I am so, so in love with it, it looks so much cleaner, tidier and overall prettier in my bedroom and I know it'll be a piece of furniture I keep forever. I actually had to rearrange my entire room to get it to fit in, so the whole room looks so new and improved! Thanks so much to Money Supermarket for asking me get involved!

  3. Oh what a beautiful dressing table! I'm looking for something similar, I was going to get the ikea white dressing table but I want something a bit different so I'm keeping my eyes open and looking in every second hand shop I pass!

  4. This is super pretty, I love the colour! Can I ask which shop you got it from? I'm living in Preston atm and really struggling to find any decent second hand furniture that isn't ridiculously over-priced!
    Thanks :)

  5. This looks so lovely, definitely £50 well spent. I've been looking for a little dressing table and I always default to Ikea just because it's so easy but I'm going to have to start scouring the second hand shops for gems like this :)
